Latest Research Technology

Learn how high performance computing tools are being used to identify novel psychoactive substances in toxicology samples.

Ambient ionization mass spectrometry (AI-MS) is an increasingly adopted tool for seized drug analysis in both traditional laboratory and forward operating laboratory settings that has shown to be useful for the detection and identification of fentanyl and other synthetic opioids.
Emerging hybrid separation detection techniques for the analysis of seized drugs, particularly applicable to emerging drugs, that can overcome the limitations of classical methods such as gas chromatography (GC)- electron ionization mass spectrometry (EI MS) and gas chromatography- flame ionization detection.

Resources

The forensic sciences form a vital part of the entire justice and regulatory system. It is divided into 12 sections representing the different areas of interest, activity, education, and expertise. To assist scientists who want to enter the forensics field of toxicology and assist in the collection, evaluation, and dissemination of information, we have gathered a list of available resources.

Podcasts

Listen as scientists describe how research impacts real-world criminal justice — from gun violence and human trafficking, to school safety and alternatives to mass incarceration.

Publications

Search a list of publications and products published by the scientific community and research institutions to learn about current research studies and their findings.

Presentations

Watch as experts cover different forensics topics using various forms of multimedia and platforms.

Tools, Apps, & Databases

The National Institute of Justice provided access to a number of free or low cost software tools, apps and databases to assist with investigations or research.

CAPRAD

Computer Assisted Pre-Coordination Resource and Database System is a nationwide database for public safety professionals to coordinate the use of and application for frequencies in the 700 and 800-MHz band.

DFORC2

DFORC2 is a cloud-based digital forensics platform, developed at the RAND Corporation and backed by Autopsy and The Sleuth Kit. This repository is used to deploy the DFORC2 backend to AWS with Kubernetes

FileTSAR+

The Toolkit for Selective Analysis & Reconstruction of Files (FileTSAR) captures data flows and provides a mechanism to selectively reconstruct multiple data types, including documents (e.g., doc, docx, pdf), images (e.g., jpg, png, gif) email (based on SMTP, IMAP, IMP), and VoIP sessions for large-scale computer networks.

TRcaller

Tandem repeats (TR) are highly variable genomic variants widely used in individual identification, disease diagnostics, and evolutionary studies. TRcaller is a software program to precisely and quickly detect tandem repeats in DNA sequences.

Illegal Online Pharmacies

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration has seen an increase in illegal online pharmacies selling and shipping counterfeit pills made with fentanyl and methamphetamine to unsuspecting customers in the United States who believe they are purchasing real pharmaceutical drugs such as Oxycodone, Adderall, Xanax, and other drugs from legitimate pharmacies.
